The magnificent size of Borobudur
In all the islands of Indonesia, Java is the beating heart holding the archipelago together. At its centre is Yogyakarta, the home of the royal family and world-famous sites. Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and is both picturesque and spiritual. Visiting early is best due to the high numbers of visitors in the afternoon and also because catching the sunrise as it hits the open green surroundings and tall peaks of the temple is an unmissable experience.
The personal touch of Prambanan
Although many people focus on the size and scale of Borobudur, the Hindu temple Prambanan offers a more personal and smaller scaled experience. The lack of steps and open plan allow you to move around at a slower pace which heightens the experience. At night the Ramayana Ballet Show fills the surrounding area with music and dance. The traditional dance showcases the artistic history that fills the area and attracts guests from around the world. Situated within a 30-minute drive from the hotel, Prambanan temple is the perfect fix for travellers with limited time to spare looking to experience the city’s rich history.
The silver history of Kotagede
It is not only the temples that show the art and history of Yogyakarta, but even the streets also hold stories and secrets. Kotagede is a historic neighbourhood that holds the remains of the first capital of Mataram Sultanate. Along the streets, you see the shadow of the former city’s identity as a strong fort with the surrounding walls. Besides its rich history, Kotagede also celebrates the silver artisans of Yogyakarta with many stores showcasing the amazing skill of the local silversmiths, such as; Wawan Silver, Bima Silver Smith or Queen Silver Kotagede for some amazing silver jewellery.
The Royal sights
The Royal family of Yogyakarta are still recognised today with Sultan Hamengkubuwono X currently sitting on the Javanese throne. Across the city are royal moments that can be enjoyed along with your travels in the city. One historical landmark is the Taman Sari Water Castle. Once the bathing house and garden that housed all of the Sultan concubines now it is a beautiful addition to the historical journey of visitors. The surrounding area has a number of places to see some stunning local art, which you can buy.
While enjoying the royal hospitality of Yogyakarta, you can also head over to the Kraton Palace, which is the current residence of the Sultan. The Palace is a highly respected place and is an amazing insight into the history and art of the Java Royal family, and you may even enjoy a traditional meal at Bale Raos restaurant.
